Top 5 Bass Fishing Baits for June
June is an amazing time to fish. There are so many techniques that work, whether you like fishing shallow or deep. Below we will breakdown our favorite baits, colors, and where we like to fish them.
1. Swinging Jig Head Creature Bait
A creature bait rigged on a swinging jig head is tough to beat in June. It’s easy to fish and consistently gets bites.
With this setup you fish it along bottom, but not slow like a jig. Instead you fish it fast on a consistent retrieve, similar to a how you would fish a crankbait or spinnerbait.
The weighted head will knock and bump around rock while the creature bait swings and the claws are kicking. This action is irresistible this time of year.
2. Deep Crankbaits
Deep diving crankbaits are my personal favorite lures to fish throughout summer. They are perfect for targeting the bass that have moved out to deeper water in order to get away from the summer heat.
I have found that the largest bass tend to school up in deeper water. If you can find this pattern you will not only catch some of the largest bass but also a good number of them. It’s an extremely fun way to fish in June.

3. Topwater
Everyone likes throwing topwater, it’s one of the most exciting styles of fishing with the blowups on the surface. June is prime time for topwater lures. In June, I focus on two styles of topwater; poppers and walking baits.
I make the choice between the two based on the size of lures bass are biting. If they are biting large baits, I’ll use a walking bait. If they are only biting smaller profile baits I’ll go with a popper.
Walking baits allow you to cover more water and tend to have more drawing power. Poppers really shine in the mornings, clear water, and outside edges where there are quick transitions from deep to shallow.

3. Squarebills
Squarebills are the perfect crankbaits for anglers who like fishing shallow around rip rap or chunk rock. Everyone knows during spawn bass move up shallow but throughout the summer there is also a population of bass the stay there all summer long.
Squarebills are great at generating in strikes from deflecting off rock and cover. They are also great for covering water quickly while you are developing a summer pattern.
I like to use a burn-pause retrieve which means reeling in quickly then pausing every few seconds. These quick burst trick bass into thinking a bait fish spotted them and are trying to get away. This triggers them to react before their meal gets away.

5. Swimbaits
Swimbaits are another great lure for targeting active fish during June. One of the great thing about soft plastic swimbaits is they can be rigged weedless or with an exposed hook, they are extremely versatile.
In June I rig my soft plastic swimbaits on an underspin. The flash and vibration from the blade makes all the difference during this time of the year when bass are chasing bunched up shad.
Look for brush piles, docks, laydowns, rock piles on points.
